Beyond Compliance: Why Smarter Batteries Start with Better Data

Written by Vaulta | 10 Sep 2025

It’s easy to assume that if a battery passes compliance testing, it must be good. But compliance only tells us that it meets a minimum standard, not how it will perform in the real world.

Across Australia, thousands of battery systems are deployed every year, and more than 300 are now listed on the CEC approved list. Yet many of these remain unproven in field conditions. Once installed, they’re largely left to run blind, until something breaks. That’s when costly failures, warranty disputes, and user frustration begin.

At Vaulta, we’ve spent years building batteries that are easier to repair, reuse and recycle. But solving battery waste isn’t just about smarter hardware, it’s also about better visibility.

That’s why we're building PlainView. It's not ready yet, but its something we're excited about and keen to talk to stakeholders about now, to ensure it fits from the get-go.

PlainView: Designed for Visibility, Built for Performance

PlainView is our real-time battery health and fleet management platform. It gives energy professionals a simple, powerful view of system performance, regardless of battery brand, size or application.

It works like a 24/7 technician, constantly monitoring how each battery is behaving, predicting faults before they happen, and flagging which systems are tracking well against warranty conditions and which aren’t. It learns what’s normal for each installation, based on actual usage, temperature, humidity, solar generation, and more. No two sites are the same, even when using the same gear. PlainView adapts to that.

And because it’s built to be brand-agnostic (this will take time and engagement), you can see all your systems in one place, whether you're an installer managing dozens of installs, or a wholesaler supporting an entire distribution network.

Beyond the Battery: Carbon, ESG, and What’s Next

We’re also building PlainView to do more than just monitor health.

Every battery feasibily has the ability to trace battery cells down to their manufacturing date, batch, and location. That level of traceability opens the door to dynamic ESG reporting and carbon tracking, including scope 3 emissions, right down to the individual battery.

This lays the foundation for a robust battery passport system that meets emerging global standards and functionally has a purpose. For installers and system owners, it means being ready for upcoming ESG and compliance requirements. For manufacturers and OEMs, it means proving, not just claiming that your products are outperforming expectations.

This kind of transparency won’t be a nice-to-have in the future. It will be mandatory. We’re building PlainView to make that transition easier and more valuable for everyone involved.

It’s Not Just About Stationary Storage

PlainView was born out of our work in home and commercial energy systems, but its value extends far beyond the power wall.

  • EV fleets can use it to monitor battery health across hundreds of vehicles, identifying patterns and planning replacements before they become urgent.

  • Construction and off-grid industries can track performance in rugged conditions and avoid costly downtime.

  • Defence and critical infrastructure teams can ensure systems stay reliable when failure isn’t an option.

Why It Matters Now

Battery failures cost more than parts. They cost time, trust, and future business. As the energy transition accelerates, and corporate decarbonisation goals take centre stage, visibility will be key to success.

For installers and integrators, PlainView can reduce call-backs and supports smarter service models. You can even let Vaulta manage the fleet for you, with regular reporting so you can stay focused on your core business.

For OEMs and wholesalers, it provides a new layer of product intelligence. If your batteries perform well, PlainView will help prove it, and protect your reputation.

And for corporates rolling out renewables, it brings confidence to your investment. Beyond an energy management system (which PlainView is not), it’s real, understandable insight into performance, emissions, risk, and ROI.

Let’s Build a Smarter Battery Future

PlainView isn’t just a platform. It’s an ecosystem, designed to reduce battery waste, improve system performance, and meet the rising expectations of customers, regulators, and the market.

We’re actively working with partners who want to be part of that:

  • Installers who want to offer smarter solutions

  • Wholesalers ready to add fleet management to their toolkit

  • OEMs confident their batteries can stand up to scrutiny

  • Corporates looking to invest in energy storage with visibility and control

If that’s you, let’s talk.
